Welcome to this week’s Sourcing Spotlight.

In this weeks edition, global supply chains are facing a convergence of major disruptions, including the closure of the Strait of Hormuz driving up shipping costs, new U.S. Section 301 tariff investigations targeting 16 nations, and Walmart's controversial rollout of digital shelf labels amid fears of AI-driven surge pricing.

Feature Story

Strait of Hormuz Crisis

The Gist: The world's most critical oil chokepoint, the Strait of Hormuz, is effectively closed due to conflict, forcing cargo ships on massive detours.

The Bottom Line: Your shipping costs are about to spike. Rerouting ships around Africa adds weeks and massive fuel costs to every journey. Expect higher freight bills and longer lead times within 30-60 days.

By the Numbers:

360%: Surge in ocean freight diversions in a single 24-hour period.

$95+: Projected price per barrel of oil for the next two months.

50-60%: Share of a ship's operating cost that comes from fuel.

Your Move: Contact your freight forwarder this week to lock in rates or cap fuel surcharges. The window to protect your business from the coming price hikes is closing fast.

New Section 301 Probes Target 16 Nations, Signalling Fresh Tariff Risks

The US has launched new Section 301 investigations into 16 major trading partners, including China, the EU, India, and Mexico, targeting what it calls "structural excess capacity" in manufacturing. This move, a direct response to a recent Supreme Court ruling that curbed the administration's tariff powers, could bring a new wave of tariffs on a vast array of products by this summer.

For sourcing professionals and product businesses, this means new risks are on the horizon. Is your supply chain exposed?

Walmart's Digital Price Tags: Efficiency vs. "Surge Pricing" Fears

Walmart is rolling out digital shelf labels (DSLs) to all U.S. stores, aiming to replace the painstaking manual work of changing paper price tags with near-instant digital updates. The company touts the move as a major leap in operational efficiency and price accuracy.

However, the nationwide expansion has ignited a firestorm of controversy. At least a dozen states are now considering legislation to restrict or ban the technology, fuelled by fears that DSLs could enable AI-driven “surge pricing” for groceries. Labour unions have launched national campaigns against what they term “surveillance pricing.”

The Bottom Line: Walmart has publicly stated it will not use the tech for dynamic pricing, and early academic research suggests such fears may be overblown. Still, the battle lines are drawn. For the sourcing and retail world, this is a critical test case where a major efficiency-driving technology is colliding with consumer trust and a wave of potential new regulation.
